It is with regrettable sameness that Fredrick William Thompson Jr's family announces his passing on June 14th, 2023. He went home peacefully while in hospice care at the American House in Petoskey, Michigan. He was born on May 21st, 1955 in Mackinaw City, Michigan to Aurlie Ann Ranville/Thompson and Fredrick Thompson Sr. He was the second child of five siblings. Fred was preceded in death by his mother, father, and two brothers, Donald Wayne Thompson and Robert James Thompson. He is survived by his older sister Barbra Holcomb of Utah, and younger brother William "Billy" Thompson of Arizona, and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was well known in the area and the community because of his longtime involvement with the Mackinaw City EMS Service and Fire Department. He served as the Fire Chief for forty-five years, and EMS Coordinator/Director for over twenty years. He was also active in the community as a business owner, serving on the Mackinaw City Planning Commission, and was the Village Zoning Administrator and Community Development Director until January 2020. He also was involved in many other community activities, clubs, and events.
Arrangements and funeral services are being handled by the family and the Macki aw City Fire Department. Visitation begins at 1:00 pm, followed by a funeral with Fire Department honors beginning at 2:00 pm, to be held on Sunday, July 9th, 2023 at the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City, with the interment being held at the Lakeside Cemetery in Mackinaw City. Following the services, a luncheon will be held at the Mackinaw City Rec Center on West Central Avenue.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the "Tip of the Mitt Firefighters Association" at 1378 Trails End Road, Mackinaw City, Michigan 49701.
