Louis A Nowak

Louis A. (Shorty) Nowak, 105 of Rogers City, passed away Monday morning February 29, 2016 at Rogers City Tendercare.

The son of Joseph and Rose (Lapczynski) was born November 16, 1910 in Alpena.

Louis and Agnes (Filarski) were married September 4, 1935 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alpena, where they made there home. Shorty worked at Western Union, Mulvena Trucking, Cronin & Co. Department store as a salesman. He also worked at the Black and White Grocery Store in Alpena and transferred in 1938 to its Rogers City store as manager. In 1950 they built Shorty's IGA, which is presently the Presque Isle County Library building, which he operated until he retired in 1967. They moved to Grand Lake for 10 years, returned to Alpena for 10 years, and in 1989 came back to Rogers City.

He was a member of Saint Ignatius Catholic Church, a life member of the Knights of Columbus 1705, and a charter member of the Rogers City Lions Club.

Surviving are 4 sons James (Carol), Jack (Gail Warren), Gary (Joan), of
Rogers City, Charles of Alpena, a daughter Mary (John) McLean of Rogers City; 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death were his wife Agnes on February 8, 2004; 7 brothers Leo, Anthony, Benjamin, Theodore, Stanley, and Aloyisius.

Louis was baptized, confirmed, and married from the St. Mary Catholic Church, his request was to have his christian burial from his first church. The Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday March 2, 2016 at 11:00 AM in Alpena at St Mary Catholic Church, with Father Joe Muszliewicz officiating. Hentkowski Funeral Home is in care of his arrangements. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Alpena.
